Section 844IAC18-1-9. Standards of practice

  •    A licensed diabetes educator shall abide by the following standards of practice:

    (1) Provide education and support for individuals with diabetes, individuals at risk for diabetes, and caregivers of those with diabetes.

    (2) Communicate and coordinate with other health care professionals to provide education and support for individuals with diabetes, individuals at risk for diabetes, and caregivers of those with diabetes.

    (3) Provide diabetes self-management services, including activities that assist an individual in implementing and sustaining behaviors needed to manage diabetes on an ongoing basis, and determining what resources will best assist those individuals.

    (4) Develop programs for diabetes management, which may include:

    (A) describing the diabetes treatment process and treatment options;

    (B) incorporating nutritional management into lifestyle;

    (C) incorporating physical activity into lifestyle;

    (D) using medications safely and effectively;

    (E) monitoring blood glucose and other parameters and interpreting and using the results for self-management and decision making;

    (F) preventing, detecting, and recommending treatment to the primary care provider for acute and chronic complications of diabetes;

    (G) developing personal strategies to address psychosocial issues and concerns; and

    (H) developing personal strategies to promote health and behavior change.

    (5) Develop an individualized education and support plan focused on behavior change, which shall be documented in an education or health record.

    (6) Develop a personalized follow-up plan for ongoing self-management support and communicating that follow-up plan to other health care providers as necessary.

    (7) Monitor to ensure if participants are achieving their personal diabetes self-management goals and other outcomes using the following frameworks and measurement techniques:

    (A) physical activity;

    (B) healthy eating;

    (C) taking medications as prescribed;

    (D) monitoring blood glucose;

    (E) diabetes self-care related problem solving;

    (F) reducing risks of acute and chronic complications of diabetes; or

    (G) evaluation of psychosocial aspects of living with diabetes.

    (8) Evaluate the effectiveness of the education and services and engage in a systematic review of process and outcome data.

    (9) Implement established and approved diabetes-specific protocol orders from the referring person who is authorized to prescribe medication, executing interventions per protocol to meet individual needs, including, but not limited to, physician-order driven medication titration and medication adjustment (e.g., insulin, oral diabetes medications, diabetes injectables, and other diabetes-related medications as assigned by protocol), for quality, timely, and accessible diabetes care. A licensed diabetes educator may not prescribe any medications if not allowed to do so under another license.
