Section 844IAC18-1-3. Education requirements

  •    An applicant for a license as a diabetes educator shall provide evidence to the board showing successful completion of one (1) of the following in accordance with IC 25-14.3-3-3:

    (1) The American Association of Diabetes Educators core concepts course and demonstrable experience in the care of people with diabetes under supervision. Demonstrable experience is a minimum of one thousand (1,000) hours within the four (4) years prior to filing an application. Four hundred (400) of these hours must be completed within one (1) year prior to filing an application.

    (2) The credentialing program of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

    (3) The credentialing program of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators.

    (4) An equivalent credentialing program as approved by the board. In order to qualify as an equivalent credentialing program, the program shall include a core body of knowledge and skills in the following areas in accordance with IC 25-14.3-3-4:

    (A) Diabetes mellitus.

    (B) Biological and social sciences.

    (C) Communication.

    (D) Counseling.

    (E) Education.

    (F) Experience in the care of individuals with diabetes.
