    Amends 575 IAC 1-2-49, 575 IAC 1-2.5-41, 575 IAC 1-3-49, and 575 IAC 1-4-49 to allow stainless steel exterior mirror backs and bracket supports on Indiana's school buses. Makes technical corrections. Effective 30 days after filing with the Publisher.



    SECTION 1. 575 IAC 1-2-49 IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS:

    575 IAC 1-2-49 Mirrors

    Sec. 49. (a) The interior clear-view mirror must be made of safety glass, be at least six (6) inches by sixteen (16) inches overall, and afford a good view of pupils. It must have rounded corners and protected edges.

    (b) There must be one (1) exterior clear-view, rearview mirror on the left side of the driver and one (1) clear-view, rearview mirror on the right side of the driver. Each mirror must be at least fifty (50) square inches and firmly supported and adjustable to give the driver a clear view of the left and right rear of the bus.

    (c) When an indirect visibility system is used to meet the requirements of this section, the system must consist of two (2) crossover and two (2) rear-facing mirrors that are eight (8) inches convex and have a seven and one-half (7 1/2) inch reflective area. This system must be mounted at the frontmost portion of the bus fender to provide visibility to the area in front of the bus and the area immediately adjacent to the left and right front wheels. Elliptical or hemispherical mirrors may be substituted on a two-for-one basis if indirect visibility requirements are met.

    (d) Exterior mirror backs and bracket supports must be black or stainless steel.
