EXECUTIVE ORDER: 07-11

FOR: DECLARING A DISASTER EMERGENCY IN NORTHERN INDIANA FOR SEVERE WEATHER

TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS:

WHEREAS, severe storms, catastrophic flooding, damaging winds, hail, and tornados battered the northern half of Indiana from July 26, 2007, through August 27, 2007;

WHEREAS, a torrential rainfall on July 26, 2007 caused flash flooding in the City of Hammond, resulting in nearly 100 homes experiencing serious flooding and over 1,000 homes being affected by sewage back-ups;

WHEREAS, severe thunderstorms with wind speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, microburst winds with speeds approaching 80 miles per hour, two tornado touchdowns, lightning, and hail swept through the northern half of Indiana on August 15, 2007, causing widespread tree damage, power outages, and damage to homes and businesses;

WHEREAS, on August 23 and 24, 2007, severe thunderstorms, with high winds and torrential rainfalls, caused wind damage to and extensive flooding of thousands of homes, businesses, a hospital, state universities, schools, and other government buildings in northwest Indiana.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., by virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby

DECLARE that a state of disaster emergency exists in northern Indiana; and

ORDER the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, having already implemented the State Emergency Plan, to provide needed emergency services to the damaged areas of Indiana impacted by the storms and to coordinate assistance with appropriate federal, state and local agencies.

This declaration of disaster emergency was in effect beginning July 26, 2007 and continues.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I, Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the State of Indiana on this 13th day of September, 2007.
