 Rule 844IAC5-5. Standards for Procedures Performed in Office-Based Settings That Require Moderate Sedation/Analgesia, Deep Sedation/Analgesia, General Anesthesia, or Regional Anesthesia

  Section 844IAC5-5-7. "General anesthesia" defined

  •    (a) As used in this rule, "general anesthesia" means a drug-induced loss of consciousness during which patients are not arousable, even by pain stimulation.

      (b) The following are conditions that a patient under general anesthesia may experience:

    (1) The ability to independently maintain ventilatory function is often impaired.

    (2) Patients often require assistance in maintaining a patent airway, and positive pressure ventilation may be required because of depressed spontaneous ventilation or drug-induced depression of neuromuscular function.

    (3) Cardiovascular function may be impaired.
