Section 680IAC2-11-3. Safety factor

  •    The minimum factor of safety shall in no case be less than four (4) for carbon steel or low-alloy steel vessels operating with metal temperatures below seven hundred degrees Fahrenheit (700°F), and for high alloy steel shall not be less than that indicated to be permissible in the applicable table of maximum allowable stress values given in Section II of the ASME code for the material and temperature involved. The factor of safety may be increased (or the maximum allowable stress may be reduced) when deemed necessary by the inspector to ensure the operation of the vessel is within safe limits.
