  •    Change Section R408.3 to read as follows: An access opening 24 inches by 18 inches (610 mm by 457 mm) shall be provided to the under-floor space. When the under-floor space access opening is through a wall, the opening shall be a minimum of 24 inches (609 mm) wide by 16 inches (406 mm) high with an areaway provided for access to the under-floor opening. The areaway shall be not less than 24 inches (609 mm) long parallel to the wall at the access opening by 16 inches (406 mm) wide perpendicular to the wall at the center of the access opening. The bottom of the areaway shall be below the threshold of the access opening. The under-floor access opening shall not be under a door.

    Exception: Access may be placed under a doorway provided the step or steps that cover the opening to the crawlspace are attached to the structure at the top with a fixed pin-type hinge, so that, when the step or steps are in the raised position, passage by way of the doorway is restricted.
