  •    Delete the title and text of Section R311.4.3 and substitute to read as follows:

    R311.4.3 Landings at exterior doors. There shall be a landing on each side of each exterior door. The width of each landing shall not be less than the width of the door served. Every landing shall have a minimum dimension of 36 inches (914 mm) measured in the direction of travel. Exterior landings shall be permitted to have a slope not to exceed.25 units vertical in 12 units horizontal.

    R311.4.3.1 Landings at the required exit door. Landings on the interior side of the required exit door shall not be more than 1.5 inches (38 mm) lower than the top of the threshold. Landings on the exterior side of the required exit door shall not be more than 8.25 inches (209 mm) below the top of the threshold. Where exterior landings serving the required exit door are not at grade level, they shall be provided with access to grade by steps, a stairway in accordance with Section R311.5 or a ramp in accordance with Section R311.6.

    R311.4.3.2 Landings at the non-required exterior door. Doors, other than the required exit door, shall have landings installed not lower than 8.25 inches (209 mm) below the top of the threshold.

    Exceptions:

    1. Where the distance in height, measured between the top of the threshold and a floor below, is 16.5 inches (418 mm) or less, a single step with tread depth of at least 11 inches (279 mm) is permitted to be installed instead of a landing.

    2. When a stairway of three or fewer risers is located at a non-required exterior door, a landing is not required for the exterior side of the non-required exterior door, provided the door, other than the screen or storm door, does not swing over the stairway.
